Life Stories: A Narrow Escape Part 1

I’m back after five days of absence. It would be nice to say I had a sabbatical, and that I enjoyed myself. However, what happened to me certainly was not a vacation.

On the morning of August 12, as I parked my car at its usual spot, I took the same nap I always take when getting there. I woke up at about 7AM, and walked my usual way to the nutrition center to have my breakfast.

When I got to the center, I was filling out an order slip when it happened. My peripheral vision started blurring. I could barely make out the letters on the left side of the slip. I thought it was because I slept wrong during my nap, so I closed my left eye thinking my right eye was still okay. The same blurring was there. Still, I tried to ignore it and waited for my vision to clear up. It got worse after that.

As I was having breakfast, I was trying to attend to some customers when the letters on the forms I was marking started floating. That’s when I knew this wasn’t becase of my nap. I had to go to a hospital, so I said my goodbyes and began walking the two blocks to the nearest hospital, which was probably the stupidest thing I ever did.

I walked with my head down and focused on walking a straight line. The blurring was still there, but I could concentrate if I just looked straight ahead. But while walking, my vision started tunneling. My field of vision was narrowing, like in the movies where everything was becoming smaller the farther I got away from the entrance of a tunnel.

Five minutes later, I thankfully got to the Emergency Room. After what the doctors told me next, I was blessed to be still alive.
